Acquapendente is a city and comune in the Viterbo province, an important centre for the agricultural production of vegetables and wine, and has a tradition of pottery.
Of very ancient origins, as historical document linked to emperor Ottone I (964d.c.) contains the first recorded use of the name Acquapendentem. The name of the city, meaning “Hanging Water”, stems from the presence of several small waterfalls forming the Paglia, a stream setting the boundary between Lazio and Tuscany.
Main sights: the Cathedral of San Sepolcro commissioned by Queen Matilde Westfalia around 900 d.c., the Watch tower a remain of the Imperial Castle, the Castle of the frazione and not to miss the Natural Reserve of Monte Rufeno.
Among the many folkloristic events a very beautiful one called “Pugnaloni” and the famous Festa della Madonna del Fiore, a religious feast dating back to 1166 d.c. when the “Madonna del Fiore” was assigned the miracle of a dry cherry tree.
