The very ancient town of Bolsena sits on the shores of Italy’s largest lake, the lake of Bolsena, a true miracle of nature. Situated North of Viterbo in the Lazio Region and on the borders of the region of Umbria. It is well known for the miracle of Corpus Christi, dating back to the year 1263. Regularly, every year in the recurrence a procession takes place to homage the miracle with a very colourful and beautiful “infiorata” (strewing of flowers) which are spread out along the streets for about 3 kilometres.
The most important monument of Bolsena is the Basilica of St. Cristina built on the remains of a pagan temple. Also very important is the Necropoli that covers a large area of the surroundings (VII B.C.) and the Castle of Bolsena.
Interesting are the local festivals such as: the infiorata (May 25th), the feast of St. Antonio da Padova (June 13th), feast of the Ortensias (June 20/22) and feast of St.Cristina (July 23/24).
Lake Bolsena is Italy’s largest lake of volcanic origins has two islands in the center, Bisentina and Martana. Bolsena is well equipped with hotels and camping sites.
Lake Bolsena provides everything for those in search of a different kind of holiday, a complete return to nature with generous, hospitable country people. A ride in a boat to draw along the unspoiled banks of the islands Martana and Bisentina, fishing with the traditional nets, skimming across the water on skis. These are just a few of the things to do when relaxing after a good meal of local specialities.
Several small "trattorias" have sprouted along the banks, often in old renovated huts previously used by fishermen. Just to the west is a second crater, which is now the small lake of Mezzano, a real earthly paradise in a setting of peace and quiet.
