Soriano nel Cimino

Soriano is the leading ancient "Borgo" of the Cimini Hills, with a well preserved historic center. Dominating at the very top is the huge Orsini Castle with its crenellated parapets, surrounded by a cluster of houses all strung together , creating one of the most charming urban layouts in Tuscia. The Castle built on a preexisting medieval structure around 1278-79 , to serve as the summer residence of Pope Nicolas III. In the period of the late Renaissance, Soriano nel Cimino was the residence of many high ranking members of the clergy, including Cardinal Madruzzo, who commissioned the beautiful Papacqua Fountain, with its figures sculptured in rock to symbolize the waters of good and the spirit of the place. Close by in the same characteristic square stands the wonderful Albani Chigi Palace (XVI th century), which is considered one of the greatest masterpieces of Ottaviano Schiratti. In the old tourist guidebooks, this hillside tourist town was often described as an ideal place for people convalescing from bronchitis and tuberculosis. Soriano nel Cimino was the birthplace of Ernesto Monaci, founding scholar of the history of Italian theatre. Among the tourist attracted to the town was Luigi Pirandello. Each year during the first two weekends of October, Soriano celebrates its chestnuts and history with an autumn festival drawing thousands of tourists to enjoy and sample the may delicious delights. This festival is considered one of the most impressive of Italy.
